As a manufacturer, if you know who’s generating orders for your comparable product, you’ve identified a potential customer.
In fact, if your product is a commodity that is often found in office buildings or classrooms, you already know that your comparable product is on bids all over the country. You just need to identify the bidders, because your customer is any dealer that services that public sector market.
For the most part, every state, city, county, local government and school district is purchasing its commodity items on competitive bids. All the dealers that compete for that business are your prospects, whether they’re local, regional or national bidders.
So how do you find them?
Here are some pro-active steps to help identify potential customers and some of the commodity items they bid:
- Request the last awarded bid that would include your product category from your state purchasing department or from one or two of the largest cities, counties and/or school districts in your state.
- Review the documents for the participating or approved vendors and their contact information. You will also see the competitive brands and prices they quote.
- If, after contacting them, the effort is fruitful, you can repeat the process in other states to build a matrix of dealers that can offer your products throughout the country.
